Water Wars | Glowyr

“What makes you think that we would willingly thirst to death, so that you can water the green lawns of Surbiton?”

The forced damming of the Tryweryn River by the city of Liverpool in the 1960s re-awakened the desire for self-determination within Wales. Forty years on, it arguably led directly to devolution. In Water Wars, England invades Wales in order to appropriate its resources and to sustain its own ecology.

Water Wars is a powerful and visceral eco-thriller which delves into a dystopian near future, where global water shortages spark political conflict and personal betrayals. As communities are torn apart by dwindling resources, the play questions humanity's priorities, the price of survival, and the impact of environmental degradation on the fabric of society. With its hard-hitting, uncompromising blend of suspense, political intrigue, and deeply personal stories, the production sparks important conversations about sustainability, ownership, and the future of our existence.

Directed by Chris Durnall, Artistic Director of Company of Sirens, Water Wars brings together a cast of highly experienced Welsh actors, expertly weaving together Welsh and English dialogue to reflect the bilingual reality of modern Wales. This eco-thriller is both global and local, underscoring Wales' rich cultural heritage while addressing an issue of worldwide importance. Water Wars is more than a play—it's a call to action. As environmental concerns continue to dominate global headlines, this production aims to challenge, inspire, and energise audiences.
